question on rack temps

Right now I am using a temp rack set up until my AP rack gets here. I have a dummy tote set up with my thermostat probe and temp guage inside directly above where the flex watt is. My temp guage reads 92 but when I feel the floor of my snake totes they only feel a little warm to the touch. It dont feel like 92 and the two snakes I have in there right now dont feel warm to the touch on their bodies.
Could the temp guage be off or am I getting a false reading the way I have it set up?

What kind of "gauge" are you using?

The snake should feel pretty warm if it is sitting on a 90-92 degree hot spot.

I get more consistent temps putting the probe over the heat tape outside of the tub, + you don't lose a tub for a probe.
I also LOVE my temp gun

Depending on the type of thermostat you have the Tstat probe reading should be very accurate. (Ranco, Johnson, Helix, Herpstat)

I personally think attaching the Tstat probe directly to the heat tape is a much easier way of managing temps. Make sure you're putting the probe on one of the levels in the middle of your rack so you don't get too much variance between the bottom and top tub temps.

I am going to be hooking up my herpstat pro tonight so that should help me out. I am cureently using a rheostat with the dial on it. I know its not the best but I needed something till my rack gets here. As for the temp guage im using a litle zoo med digital guage.

By putting the probe directly on the heat tape wouldnt that give you an inaccurate reading on the actual temp inside the tub on the hot spot?

Im new to the whole rack thing so Im just getting things adjusted now

The probe for the thermoSTAT goes directly on the heat tape. When you are measuring the temps for the hot spot, you should put a thermometer inside the tub and adjust the thermostat until its 90-94*.

Is the thermometer a probe thermometer? I would say that would be pretty acurate for measuring temps.

It is a lot easy to shoot temps in racks with a heat gun though. That way you don't have to have a thermometer in each tub. Just check with the heat gun once a day or so.

Im gonna make the adjustments. This will probably be much easier when I get my AP rack. But im gonna make a few adjustments. The temp guage im using is a probe guage. Ill move the thermostat guage onto the heat tape and then measure in tub temps with the guage.

I cranked up the thermostat a bit earlier and it seems alot better to my liking now. Thanks again for the help. I just got my herpstat today so that should simplify things a bit too.
