My rack has belly heat. I prefer belly heat my wife cools down the house at night and the belly heat seems to keep the temps good. If your house is usually warmer then back heat would work fine.

(GREG) As for ditching the decor that is my wife's doing. She wants the snakes to feel at home and be comfortable. Can't argue with her she is always right.

So your basing back heat vs belly heat on your friends three snakes, while hundreds of thousands of snakes are doing great on it right now? Did you ask what kind of stat he used? Probably cheap.

Any chance you have any info on what happened to snakes that had back heat with a thermostat that was faulty?

Re: pic of my new RBI RACK

I prefer belly heat for a more efficient basking spot. Heat travels vertically, not horizontally. So most of your back heat is traveling up the side (vertically) and not into (horizontally) the enclosure.

I use Helix thermostats with a back up thermostat, so I don't worry about failing thermostats.
