    LOL! I had something similar happen when I tried to introduce a substrate besides newspaper! I had put cypress in my girl's enclosure to boost the humidity...keep in mind she had only been housed on newspaper up until this point...Typically, when I put her back in after I clean out her enclosure, I just show her her hide and she goes right in. This time, however, she tenatively stuck her head in, looked around for a couple of seconds then backed out as if to say, "Hey...there's dirt in there!" So I had to compromise and cut a small piece of newspaper to put just under her hide for her to lay on...she was happy as a clam to have her "newspaper security blanket." Perhaps stick a little cypress just in his hide?
