    Exclamation Is respitory infection contagious?

    2 QUESTIONS

    1. Is a ball pythons respitory infection contagious to other snakes?

I would like to know because 1/3 of my snakes has RI, and trust me ive been taking my precautions, but I would still like to know.

    2. While on the subject of respitory infections i have now switched over from oral baytril to baytril injections for my 170 gram normal male ball python....

The doctor said to give 0.035 mls every 2 days by injection for 2 weeks to him...... does that sound right to you?

    Re: Is respitory infection contagious?

It is very infectious. If you hold an infected snake and then hold another snake, it can spread, but the baytril and a warm enclosure with proper humidity should help.

    Re: Is respitory infection contagious?

I have found respiratory infections to be very contagious... and its a giant pain when you go from 1 snake in a rack having it before you realize it and spreading it to all the others while cleaning/etc...

Another road to wander down in your investigation is...

If 1/3 of your snakes have upper respiratory infections, and you have been taking proper precautions as far as cross contamination as you said, then you may want to look at your husbandry. How are you keeping your snakes? Temps, humidity, what kind of rack/tank/etc.

    Re: Is respitory infection contagious?

He (my ball python) got RI because i was not consistant with keeping his humidity up....but i have learned my lesson lol. Everything else with everyones enclosers, temps etc. are fine atm. Switching to a rack/tubs system asap because glass tanks are aweful to keep humidity and temp the way you want it.

The way I see it, RI is as contagious in snakes as the common cold is in people.

This is a 7 year old thread you would get more answers by creating your own.

But no RI are species specific.
