Accurite temp gauge
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I recently switched to the accurites with the probe but what I need to know is - there is an "in" temp and an "out" temp, which one is tied to the probe??? I am thinking it is the "in" side but not sure.
And what is the ideal temps I want to see for the "in" and the "out" readings.
Thanks everyone.

Re: Accurite temp gauge
The probe reports the outside temperature. It's meant for you to stick the probe out your window or door or something, while the thermometer unit itself stays inside. It wouldn't be very handy to have to go outside to check your inside temperature, would it?
As for temps, you will get several different answers, but generally 75f-85f cool side, 85f-95f hot side. I would stick your probe directly onto the area of the tank right above your UTH, then cover with substrate. This represents the hottest temp your snake could get to if it burrows.

Re: Accurite temp gauge
I stuck the probe directly to the inside of the hide - that is what I am trying to determine the heat range of.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Accurite temp gauge
I have two UTHs and two AcuRite thermometers with probes. The "in" temp is the ambient air, and the probes ("out") are stuck to the glass, above the UTHs. I try to maintain ambient temps between 76F (I'd prefer 78F, but I live in a walk-in freezer, and his ambient temps fluctuate a bit, depending on when the A/C is kicking in) and 88F and belly temps (on the glass) of 82F and 94F (these don't fluctuate as much, and I strive for 92F as a high). His actual substrate temps are probably lower, since he doesn't seem inclined to burrow, but he has the option to get to all of his optimal temps.

Re: Accurite temp gauge
Okay, I am still struggling with these new accurite guages. I bought the ones with the temp probe so I could feed the probe into the hide in order to see what the temp was in the hide.
Well, the temp on my hot side is 89/90 but the temp reading from inside the actual hide on the hot side says about 84 degrees - is this okay. I need to know if the temp in the actual hide is high enough even with the surrounding area outside of the hide being 89/90
I guess it confuses me that the surrounding area around the hide is 89/90 then how can the temp inside the hide be soo much lower???

Re: Accurite temp gauge
To clarify, your probe should be right on your heat source (UTH?) it should be on the glass under the substrate. This temp should be no hotter than 94*F. The rest of the accurite unit should go on the cool side to measure the ambient air temp.
