Hi,
The main poroblem I can see if you are not measuring the temps on the glass where he is lying.
I would throw the reptile carpet away, put the helix probe outside the enclosure between the heatmat and the bottom of the tank and adjust it so the glass temps pose no risk then maybe thin the bedding a bit to get the temps to what you want inside his warm end hide. 
That way he can't mess with the probe or ever come into contact with temps that would cause him any probs.
