    My first and last escape...

    ONE BREEDING GROUP...
    1.3 asf's...

chewed threw metal wire.... and got out.
lets just say, my 3 story house, is difficult to find them... but i did good.. got 3 so far..

i turn all the light off, with a redlight head lamp, and my dog's hard rubber chew stick thing... and when i seen one.. i bludgeoned it to death...
then went to go tell my mom i got one..
and found one in her room... and repeated the blugeoning.
late tonight, i was laying in bed..
and heard somthing in my closet, i turned the light on, to find a little bugger staring at me... he was killed too...
    one is somewhere...
but, im glad i got 3.
all my asfs are going into GLASS TANKS, AND METAL LIDS.
they will no escape. or i will get rid of them all. haha

just had to share my expierence.
and i for those who do not understand my reason for killing them,
if they got into house hold chemicals, or anything, it could kill my snakes, so id rather be safe than sorry...

Re: My first and last escape...

lol you are lucky, I have hte reptile type tanks ( I plug the bottom hole with 2 pieces of wood with a drywall screw ), I used a piece of plywood for my tops I cut it ot fit into the track thatthe screen tops do ( takesa lot of sanding to make the fit) and i use some 1x1 and rat/chicken wire ( about 1/2 inch mesh) to cover a hole that about 2/3 of the center mass for air. So far not escapes and no great chewing issues. I guess the scrap plywood and 2x3 piece made into a table solved that and gave them a hidding place.

Re: My first and last escape...

Congrats on finding all the escapees. There was a while I was entranced by youtube videos of homemade live-capture rodent traps. They're funny to watch, especially the ones that dump rodents into buckets. If I ever had escapees, I'd give that a shot just for giggles.

    chewed through the wire!!

oh, man I just made a rack for breeding ASF's.

did you have anything in the tubs for them to gnaw on?

I was reading another post about leaving some wood in the tub so they're pre-occupied with chewing that instead of trying to chew on the mesh or the tub itself.

I use stainless screen for the tops of my larger grow out aquariums (75Gl)
and they are starting to open up an area next to the water bottle. Im going to patch the area with some hardware cloth. I also had a group chew a hole into the water bottle and one climbed up inside. Took me forver to get him out.

Re: My first and last escape...

This is why i just took my surplus aquariums (two 30 gal & two 10 gal) and made them into homes for my ASF's. I already had the tanks and a few supplies so i only needed to pay for the covers and a couple extra water bottles.

Ive read horror stories about ASF's chewing through just about anything if allowed to.

Glad to hear you got all of them but the killing part was fast I hope. I lost a norway rat in my house once. The cat found it & just stared at the corner where it had gotten through a small space to hide. I just set up a small carrier with cat food and waited very patiently for it to come out. Grabbed it and put it back in its tank. I didnt want to kill it right there. I prefer to wait til feeding time
