    Re: Venomous Yes Or No?

I do enjoy looking at and learning about Hots very much. As to owning one, i go back and forth on that decision. Someday, with the proper training, Yes, i would love to own a few.

Whether that will happen or not, and whether or not im still interested in furthering my herp keeping experience in that direction, in those years to come, we shall see.

Im gonna stir the pot here, I have a venomoid weastern diamondback.

I know that may piss some people off but he is super healthy, eats great and has no digestion issues. I treat him like he is "hot" though.
I will get some actual hots when I move out and have the proper facility and space to keep them. ( i have a heated shed away from my house that they are in now)

    Re: Venomous Yes Or No?

I said no because I dont have the desire to own one... not yet at least. I think it would be cool to own one and watch them take out prey. And some look cool. But besides that not worth the risk.

Wow, so that would leave you as a yes, or a no?

I think gaboons are the most beautiful animals on the planet. I love ALL hots, and I do not think badly of people who keep them, but I think there is definitely a line between a pet and not a pet. I do not believe that a venomous snake in my care would be as happy as it would be in the wild.

In other words, no. Even if I were experienced enough to feel comfortable working with hots, I do not personally believe that they can be kept happily in captivity.

I'm very curious.... How are constrictors different from hots in this regard? Why are our pythons, boas and colubrids "happy" being kept in captivity, but a snake with venom would not be? They're all still snakes, with the same basic needs (security, consistent environment, food, water)...they just go about dispatching their prey in a different manner.

As far as the poll question goes....I fall into the camp that loves hots as much as I love all snakes, but would never choose to keep one myself because of the high degree of risk involved in doing so. There are too many stunningly beautiful non-deadly snakes out there to keep them all....so I don't feel any strong need to add hots to that list, no matter how beautiful they are.

    Re: Venomous Yes Or No?

Do rear fanged count? I'd love to have a FWC, Hognose, and Mangrove one day...

If I had the money to responsibly care for a hot, I definitely would. Keeping the supply of anti-venom alone is a potential cost of thousands...
That brings me to a question...Do the hot keepers on this site, especially those with other people living in their home, keep a supply of anti-venom?

I think venomous are incredible. But I am way to paranoid and couldn't live with the risk...
Mild rear fanged however are worth the smaller risk for me. They are awesome as well!

I like the Eyelash Vipers. Do you know how much they range from. I hear there quite expensive....
