I bought one of those light tents from Ebay. With 3 flourescent bulbs, the equivalent of 120 incandescent watts each, they insisted I could take perfect pictures without a flash or additional lighting. I found this near impossible, no matter how large I opened my aperture and bumped up the ISO speed.
The biggest thing for me was a quality Canon 430 EX II speedlight with a diffuser so it didn't flash directly on the subject. I use this in conjunction with the light tent. This was enhanced by a wireless setup where I can mount the flash remotely, off to the side of the light tent or even on top with a boom. This consistency has been the biggest factor helping the quality of my pics, since now my flash doesn't move everytime my camera does.
