new guy has a question about heating. opinions PLEASE

I am building a wood cage with a glass front for a ball python.

I am thinking about putting one of those round ceramic heaters on
the out side and on the side of the cage instead of on the top.

It will be raised enough off of the side as to not allow the animal to burn it self.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this type of set up?

    thank you
    Bill

I don't have any experience with ceramic heaters, but I can tell you that flexwatt with a good thermostat is a sure thing.

is there a reason why u want to put a heat lamp?

in my experience, they just sucked all the humidity out, and made my BP have a bad shed.

what size are u trying to make this enclosure?

EDIT: and ya, UTH + t-stat is the best way to go

I am not so sure a under the tank heater would work with a 3/4" plywood floor.

I realy don't care what type of heat I use as long as the ball is happy.

    floor size is 22"L x 13 1/4"D. the inside height is 10".

Balls are usually better off with some sort of belly heat. It helps with their digestion. A heat lamp or CHE could work, but keeping the humidity up may be a problem.

It may be worth it to see if you can find a way to get some sort of belly heat in there. Perhaps have a layer of glass on the inside on the bottom with the heat source sandwiched between the wood and the glass? I dunno, that may be asking for a fire hazard

If you go with the CHE on the side, be sure there is some sort of mesh/cover over it. Even if it's up off the ground, BP's still like to climb sometime, and I would hate to see your lil guy get burned!

Either way you should post pictures when you are done!

You can put it inside the enclosure if the wood is to thick and just route the cord out of the cage. Then you can place a piece of lineolieum over it

radient heat panel would much nicer, you won't have to build such a tall cage, which will make it easier to keep the right temps and humidity and all that. check out pro-products, their generally accepted as the best RHPs.

but if your trying to go the cheeper route and tub with some belly heat is going to be your best bet.

I agree. A display cage would work better with a radiant heat panel. They are kinda pricey but I think it will be worth it in your case.
