Electric guitars?

Well I'm thinking of dumping some cash into buying a new guitar.

I currently own a steel string martin DXME dreadnought and a steel string washburn rover.

I mostly play fingerpicking pieces, and quite a bit of classical. I'm surprised that I haven't picked up a classical guitar yet actually, but I just love the sound of steel strings.

Anyhoo I've been thinking I'd love to expand my playing a bit and move towards electric guitars.

I'm sure we've got accomplished musicians here who would be able to advise me in this new adventure.

Would anyone care to give advice to a moderately capable guitar player with no experience regarding electric guitars, how they function, different capabilities, and most of all how to start shopping around while keeping both quality and finances in mind?

Not good for the budget, but I've always been a fan of Ernie Ball Music Man guitars. Washburn makes a few nice models that play and sound great for a more affordable price.

A washburn was my first electric and I love it and still love it to this day. Not the greatest but at the same time dont put to much a hurting on your wallet

You can pick up a Washburn X-50 with either seymour duncan or EMG active pickups for around $500 new. That model plays great and sounds excellent.

I used to work at a guitar shop for 5 years, and have talked to plenty of people in your EXACT position.

Seeing as you said you like to finger pick and play classical styles. I would not reccomend getting anything with extremely heavy humbuckers (aka double coild pickup) like EMGs.

They are going to be very agressive and extremely bright sounding.

I would suggest maybe some sort of DOT Hollow body?

Epiphone makes some very nice semi-hollow electrics that will rock your socks off.

If you wanted to go solid body, I think maybe a Strat would do ya some good. Very playble necks, and a great range of tonal qualities.


But ultimately YOU are going to have to play the guitar you want....so YOU are going to have to choose it.

Go to the shop, play some Axes....get a feel for the world of electrics. You will make your own decisions based on what feels right to you.

Oh, I didn't really catch on to what time of music he was gonna be playing. EMG pickups would be brighter and better for heavier tones. The Duncans sound good and I think they have a coil tap if I remember correctly.
You can get some cool semi-hollow bodies that would sound cool. Epi guitars can be good for the money if you get a good one. Gretch's sound really cool IMO and I think they have a really classic look.

i was just stating my current background in guitar, I'm looking at EXPANDING that, so getting something for new playing styles isn't a BAD idea just a clarification

Anyone care to explain to me differences in pickups??
