Breeding with balls who usually have hides.

Hi,

This is my first year of breeding, and yesterday I had introduced my male Mojave to my female Normal, but the male totally freaked out and spend the hours in there trying to escape. a.e. trying to find an opening in the tub.

Now when he is housed in his own tub, he has a hide which he frequently uses,
but in the tub with the female there is just newspaper and a waterbowl.

He weighs 545 grams, is 14 months old, and she is 1600 grams and 3 years old.

Any pointers?

Are you 100% sure they are sexed right? If they are then just keep trying.

yeah i just introduced my spider and my albino. they had hides and now they dont, except they seem relatively interested in each other. they at least just coil up together. i introduced them together about 16 hours ago. no copulation yet.

i had a young spider male that freaked out like that during his first two breeding attempts but from the third pairing and on he blossomed into the stud that he now is.

i would say keep trying him but if it continues to stress him out too much then let him mature a bit longer.

Thanks, He's just gone into shed so I've removed him from the female and the tub and put him back into his own enclusure.

I will try again next week, and keep trying for 3 days on, 3 days off-periods.

I asked a similar question (regarding the hides) when I first introduced my pair, and nobody had a definitive answer. So I tried it both ways, and noticed that Mona got particularly agitated without the hide... since each of them did have hides before mating, they both looked uncomfortable in the empty tub. I ended up making a new - bigger - hide from a small litter pan, so they could fit easily inside and still get their "lovin" on. I found them copulating within hours of adding this new hide, so I guess it's working fine!

All I can say is to keep introducing them, and maybe he'll get more interested over time? My boy (pastel) is only ~550g and a year old (maybe younger), and got down to business really fast... so I don't think size/age matters, but some are ready sooner than others it seems. Could also have been the impending shed that bothered your boy, since many snakes get cranky during that time. Good luck!

Once breeding season is over the females get their hides back.

I use no hides at all except with hatchlings, and sometimes get this same response, but he usually settles down fairly quickly.
Most of my males seem to like to be out, so it's fairly normal for them to protest getting shoved into a strange tub

So, would you recommend I/we do that too? I wasn't sure, and just had to rely on the snake's reactions...
