Seems like they prefer thick substrate to burrow themselves in at all ages.

with no hide, they will try to go under the water bowl lol.
I have one, and he lives under his moss! He has a hide, but he's not often in it.
I have a breeding pair currently - never had a hide, ever. they're just over 10 years old......

I think all snakes should at least have the option of a hide, even if a 'hide' means enough substrate to burrow under and out of view.
