Any car mechanics???
Im having a bit of bad luck this week. My explorer has crapped out on me. The transmission is slipping. Its pulling the car but when the gears shift it just revs up and finally catches. I was trying to change the shift solenoid but when I took the pan off the transmission there are 6 solenoids that all look Identical. Does anyone know which one is the shift solenoid?

Re: Any car mechanics???
If memory serves there is one for every gear.. and which one is which I have no clue.. But I think you have a solenoid for every gear.. if it is slipping and doing that in all gears you may need to have the pump inside that supplys the tranny with fluid.

Re: Any car mechanics???
See I thought it was the pump inside that was messed up but my brother in law swore up and down it was a solenoid. If it is the pump inside is there anyway I could fix that and change it out without having to get a whole new tranmission? Thank you so much for the help

Yea but It would mean Dropping the tranny and totally tearing it down.. And unless your familiar with doing that I'd let a pro do it cause things can go south fast with them..

Re: Any car mechanics???
cheaper to go to a junkyard and grab another tranny!! its a ford and a known problem you should be able to do a search online for common ford tranny problems and might get lucky. i would go to a salvage yard and just buy a used one.

Re: Any car mechanics???
yea ive been trying to find a new tranny but I cant find the right one. The junkyard closest to me has one for a v-8 but mine is a v-6

Re: Any car mechanics???
Some of the v8 transmissions were the same as the v6, depending on the years. First off how many miles does your explorer have? Also, it may not be the shift solenoid. Other issues occur that may make it seem like that. Check on autotrader/craigslist, a lot of the time you can find a wrecked one. Getting a automatic rebuilt can be pricey, standards are always cheaper. I just had to drop my friends T-56 tranny out of his 98 z28 to rebuild it, of course it was really cheap because he just had to give me a little money and treat me to lunch.
