Should I get a second UTH???

    Hello,

I'm new to the site and have just purchased my first ball python (now I'm just waiting for it to arrive). I have a question. I live in Japan and like most apartments here my apartment doesn't have insulation, so winter is going to get kinda cold here. I do have a tub set up for my soon to be BP with 2 identical rock hides, an UTH with a repti temp 500r thermostat, and 2 thermometers. My question is my warm side temp is about 94degrees and my cool side temp is about 80degrees in the day and 77degrees at night. Do you think I should buy one more UTH and thermostat to put on the cool side to keep the temp at about 85degrees?

    Any suggestions are great appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Sheena

You could try insulating parts of the tub to help with your temps but if its to cold you might end up having to use a smaller UTH to supplement the cool side. The lowest temps I feel comfortable with would be 80 degrees but maintaining an 82-84 coolside would be ideal.

You could get a small space heater for the room.

Adding another UTH is possible without getting another thermostat. You would need to get a dimmer and plug the UTH into the dimmer and then into the extra plug on the 500r unit. Then dial down the temperature on the dimmer so that it is what you want your cool side to be.

In the winter I insulate the front of my tubs with this aluminum covered foam that is used to insulate Hot/Cool ducts. I found it in the heating and cooling section of home depot. I'm sure its not the prettiest solution but it worked for me on helping me get those extra couple degrees on the cool side. I have my tubs in a rack system though so there is only one exposed side that I had to insulate.
