    playing with food

My BP has always ate well with live mice. Today I gave him a live mouse he striked and coiled instantly. After a couple of minutes he let go and for the past hour has been moving the dead mouse around like he is playing with it. I have never seen this happen before. Anyone know why my snake is doing this?

    Re: playing with food

Well the reason for this is the mouse had bit my snake and I think my snake couldn't get the mouse loose so he was dragging it around. I got the mouse off my snake and my snake got very violent so I'm not able to see what damage was done. Is there anything I can put on the wound or should I take him to the vet?

it depends in the severity of hte bite. If it is just a simple puncture wound(one good Bite) then simply applying iodine or neosporin to the bite and the wound will heal pretty quickly. You are going to have to get the snake and look it over really good and make sure nothing is bad. If it is then yes take it to the vet and have it looked over. Dont be too worried snakes are extremely resiliant and heal remarkably well. Todd

My snake ate his mouse. Before puting him back into is cage I looked him over. I didn't see any blood but there is a scrape look where the mouse bit him. I put some neosporin where the bite is and put him in his cage and he is now in his hide. Hopefully he will be ok.

Just make sure the neosporin doesn't have added pain relief.

That strikes me as odd, because I heard that only rats are 'smart' enough to try and protect themselves. Good thing I never keep my eyes off those silly rodents during feeding.

Hahah, actually, just this last feeding, my BP was staring down the mouse, literally millimeters away, touching noses. It made me laugh. Then he struck. Teehee.

I've seen a few people say this. Is the added pain relief just another ingredient that is useless, or will it cause harm to the snake?

You heard wrong; from my experience mice are much more aggressive although one a rat gets above the "small" size they can also be dangerous. Lucky for me my snakes take either FT or PK at that size.
