    Rant - School System Fail

Do you ever feel like 'the powers that be' must be conspiring against you?

There are so many things wrong with the way my school (and the school system in general) is run that I wont even try to mention all of them. The long and the short of it is that if anybody ever told you that all you need to succeed is persistence and determination, they lied. You also need at least a LITTLE cooperation from whatever institution or person you're dealing with.

I started signing up for classes the first day I'm allowed to, paid for them, and printed my schedule. What could go wrong? Well, the Governator could increase the cost of classes per unit without giving me any notice, slapping an extra 80 bucks onto my bill, which resulted in me being dropped from every class until I pay for them. The system isn't actually programmed to do this, it just does, because it's cheaply made and full of bugs. As the days pass, the classes I want fill up with other people without my knowledge, and when I show up on the first day I find I'm not on anybody's roll sheet. I throw a hissy fit at the admissions office and manage to get registered in the classes again. (this probably bumped an unlucky few people off of the wait lists of those classes. hm.) One class dropped me anyway for "being absent on the first day". I was there, just not on the roll sheet. It was molecular biology, which I needed to transfer. I had bought the textbook from the campus bookshop for $95 before class, and they would only buy it back from me for $2 because during the 2 days it had been in my possession, it went from 'new' to 'used'. All that had really happened was I took the shrink wrap off.

Now, several of my teachers are posting printable homework assignments online at the school's website. Last year, I never once had an issue getting onto the site. Of course now, when my grade depends on it, I inexplicably can't access it. Nobody knows why that only in MY house do I get an error message when trying to sign on. I know it's not the system's fault, it's something to do with my house or my account, because friends of mine can use the site, no problem. One friend of mine even got onto my account from his house, but after I'd driven over there in 102 degree weather with no A/C, it suddenly wasn't working anymore. I e-mail the administration office to try to make them fix it (because, of course, there's no support system in place for the site/program itself), and they respond to my 3-paragraph rant with one sentence: "If you need further assistance, please contact the administration office." with a list of contact information, including the e-mail address they had just responded to me from. That's it. Win.

I'm now taking a break from studying for a math test that my teacher told us on the first day was scheduled for last tuesday, that on the tuesday he said was bumped up to the next thursday, which wasn't given that day and was then told in an e-mail later that night would be given this upcoming tuesday, but in the syllabus says is scheduled for 9/3, thursday of next week.

Was school ever this troublesome for you?

I'm glad to say, no! Your problems are horrible and I hope you don't have to put up with this kind of crap forever. I just wanted to send positive vibes your way and let you know that not every educational institution is as poorly managed as yours seems to be.

I actually loved how enrollment and all that worked at my college, there was a problem ONCE with a server crashing (hey, it happens), but the administration and IT department fixed it so everyone was happy.

Re: Rant - School System Fail

Before I strat my answer to your question I would like to say sympathy is coming your way, those events really suck and I hope it gets better for you.

I went into my local community college going for a AA transfer degree to start my trip to become a psychologist or even major in political arts, I was devoted to those two ideas with all of my heart at the time. I went in with two scholarships and the thought that with perservierence and determination I could make my goal, even though the degree required many math classes ( my achielies heel). Well, in two terms I lost a scholorship, not becuse my schooling was bad, but becuse the foundation basically went bankrupt . I was not notified and billed a week before next term with a threat of being reported to collections. I managed to jump through that hurtle only to find out most of the future classes I needed to take had been removed from the school becuse of budget cuts.

Here I am a year after said events jobless, no unemployement ( did'nt make enough to qualify) no chance at going to a college around here ( lack of money and distance) and lack of faith in our government processes. My out look now is that hopefully one of the many applications I have sent out will get me an interview and a job, but when I , a ex student, am competting with people who have worked there whole life and those with degrees...Well I live on faith. Once I have an income , I hope to start breeding BP's as a hobby which after time (years) can become my career.

Did't mean to ramble, My answer to your question is just a well informed one

Re: Rant - School System Fail

Earlier this year I applied for a program that would pay for all my tuition. I figrued I wouldn't get in since I didn't live in the same county as the college. I applied since my step-dad knew a guy who's son got in, but didn't live in the county. I got declined, no biggie. Found out about two months later, some of my paperwork was kind of goofed, so they resubmited it. I was told it sometimes happened while they were sorting out who got into the program and who didn't.

Earlier this month, I was checking to see how much I owed for tutition and found out the program I applied for paid for it. Woot! Then I started getting letters/e-mails requesting proof that I live in the same county as the college. Of course, I'm not going to lie, so I ignored the letters. So, the money got yanked and I'm back to oweing nearly $1300 in tuition Dx.

Wow, that sucks. It's amazing how people offering free money to people can actually cause so much trouble.

I forgot to mention previously that my science class that I'm taking instead of the one I got dropped from is seriously over-enrolled. Me and about 15 other people (on top of the 90 or so already with seats) are sitting on the steps in a lecture hall, without desks. Muh.

Jeeze. You'd love my college. I'm taking introductory biology for majors and the max the class can hold is 24 people. The actual class size including me is maybe 16-18 people, not including those who have never shown up.

Re: Rant - School System Fail

My biggest problem with school is everyone constantly saying "fail" and "win."

    /s

I'm actually starting first year of college later this month. No problems yet as far as registration, but I'll see how it goes when school actually begins.
