Well, what type of animal do you want to keep in the cage? Are you looking into getting a reptile, amphibian, insect, bug, etc.? I can post a few ideas up for the things I listed above, but if you do not know how to care for any of the ones I list below, then you best be researching on the one that interests you the most

    SNAKES:
    Corn snake
    Kingsnake
    Milksnake
    Garter snake
    Hognose snake
    Ribbon snake
    Ball python
    Spotted python
    Children's python
    Blood python
    Green Tree python
    Jungle Carpet python
    Sand boa
    Rosy boa
    Dumeril's boa
    Red Tail boa
    Brazilian Rainbow boa

Some of the ones I listed are intermediate snakes to own, so doing research would be the best thing to do just to see how difficult it is to care for that animal, also as well as how big it gets because some of the species I listed get over 6 feet long.

    LIZARDS:
    Uromastyx
    Bearded dragon
    Leopard gecko
    Crested gecko
    Fat Tailed gecko
    Giant Green Day gecko
    Chinese Water dragon
    Green Iguana
    Savannah Monitor
    Tegu
    Black Throat monitor
    Rough neck monitor
    Vield Chameleon
    Sengal Chameleon

Some of the lizards I listed are intermediate lizards to care for, so researching would be the best to do to find out how hard it is to care for them and how large they can get.

    AMPHIBIANS:
    Pacman frog
    Bull frog
    Tree frog
    Red-Eye Tree frog
    White's Tree frog
    Tomato frog
    Burrowing toad
    Fire Belly newt

I don't really know of many amphibians since they do not catch my interest, but I did name a few.

    TURTLES & TORTOISES:
    Red Eared Slider
    Box turtle
    Mud turtle
    Map turtle
    Soft Shelled turtle
    Snake Necked turtle
    Snapping turtle
    Sulcata tortoise
    Desert tortoise

I believe some of the turtles and tortoises I listed you would need a license to own. I know for sure you would need a license to own a Desert tortoise, though.

    BUGS & INSECTS:
    Tarantula
    Spider
    Emporer scorpion
    Praying Mantis
    Butterflies
    Beetles
    Flies

Don't really know too much about the bugs either lol.

    OTHER:
    Mice
    Rats
    Bunnies
    Rodents
    Birds

Well there is some animals for ideas of what you may want to house in a 40 gallon enclosure.

I would put a boa in there just because its a pretty good size, and they are definitely sturdy animals.

You're on bp.net & you're asking us? lol I know I know.. Its a place for ALL herps lovers. But in my opinion i would get either a Ball, Blood, any true dwarf locality boa, or a pair of lizards that get meduim sized. Like a beardie, basilisk, blue tounge skink, uromastyxs etc.. And make a nice display terrarium. My opinion since they are some of my favorites. But its really up to you. Just make sure you research whatever you decide to get so you know everything you can about it.

Get a Ball they ROCK! Seriously though what ever you decide to get do a lot of research on it first and make sure you have the tank completely setup with everything you need BEFORE bringing home the animal! It's totally worth taking the time to do the research!

40 Gallon tank isn't big enough for a full grown boa.
