I will agree with Pat and Colin. It has lots of attributes that say jungle but some that tell me it is likely a high percentage jungle cross.

Please post some better pics.

That was an interesting read; it seems we can safely conclude that the snake in question in this thread is definitely a carpet python.

I appreciate the input guys. I took the snake to 3 different local python breeders this weekend and came away with 3 different species. One said he was a Carpet, the next claimed he was a Jungle and the 3rd said it was a cross between the two. So basically I'm no closer to knowing what species this snake is than I was last week when I brought him home.

Hm, that's interesting. "Jungle" presumably means Jungle Carpet (Morelia spilota cheynei). "Carpet" could mean any subspecies within Morelia spilota or any hybrid/intergrade of subspecies within that classification, and so is extremely non-definitive. If by "Carpet," they meant coastal carpet (Morelia spilota mcdoweli), then the 3 of them have basically come to the same conclusion as this thread: it's either a jungle, a coastal, or a jungle/coastal mix. No way to be conclusive w/o breeding/lineage records.

I'm leaning toward a jungle/coastal mix myself at this point. I don't have access to any of the breeding records so it's a crap shoot at best. In all honestly though, I'm really not worried about it simply because I think he's one gorgeous snake and regardless of his official species name and lineage, I'm just happy I have him. Thyanks everyone for all the help and input!!!!

since you're not breeding it, you'd be better off calling it a jungle... coastals simply don't have that pattern, color, body shape, or labial markings.

Thanks Colin. I am going to get better pics today of him to post as well. He's had a week to adjust so I'm going to get some good pics of him to post which may shed some more light as to what exactly he might be. Stay tuned...

Why not just label it a carpet python??? If you are not sure exactly what type or species it is, labeling it a carpet python, while vague, is absolutely truthful.
