Housing BRBs in WATER

I stopped by petland in overland park KS, and they had a beautiful rainbow boa. It was housed on....water... Yes about a 30 inch zoo med cage, with sand in the bottom and about 2 inches of WATER. NO dry land where the snake could get out. I don't have the 350 to save this poor snake, and they would just order another anyway. This just makes me sooo mad.

You should of asked for the manager and told him atleast a better way to care for the snake.

You'd think in OP there'd be better care of stuff....

But some of the worst I've seen was out there.

I just avoid pet stores all together to avoid the heart break.

i agree. even though one of the petsmarts near me has pretty healthy animals and there is this nice lady there who has a retic and like 5 bps lol shes cool and always helps me with getting stuff there. i once asked her"when you first worked here were the animals in bad shape?"she said they were but she convinced the manager to let her care for the reps. shes a great lady. wish there were more out there in the pet stoers lol.

I am going to call back and get the OWNER of the shop. This Petland is privately owned.

Does anyone know if the Board of Inquiry can be used to call out petstores such as this and make them answer to the general public?

I would give them the opportunity to fix the problem before reporting the petshop on the BOI now if you try to educate them and they do not comply go ahead.

You can alert local aspca about the conditions. Or humane society sort of deal.

Actually, a fellow herper talked to the guy in charge of reptiles today while i was at work. He was very receptive and very interested in all she had to say. It seemed like she taught him a lot of stuff. He is actually more a lizard guy but seemed very eager to correct things with the snakes. Good to hear for a change.

As far as calling the local humane society. They could give a crap less around here. I have called on a different and truely terrible pet store 10 minutes from my house and they haven't done squat but give me the run around. Finally I got to the highest point I could go with their little run around crud, and the guy told me basically there are no laws in this state that protect reptiles in pet stores. Your congressmen have decided no one cares. So, tough poo. I was furious but not much else I can do.

Sadly that store is also now expanding. AND they sponsor our local reptile show. Great since they house boas, pythons, and corns together and there is quite possibly a state wide snake mite family reunion going on at their store.

I won't even step foot in that shop anymore for fear for my own animals. Last time I was there there were so many mites all over their animals you could see them like sesame seeds all over the snakes... To those of you who are familiar with mites, you know how sneeky these things are. These were not. They were fat bloated and happy, except the ones that were drown in the bowls. Or maybe I just know what to look for. What else would I expect from a store that sells red tailed catfish (something that needs 1000+ gallons), baby nurse sharks, and had a dead bird eating tarantula in its cage covered in maggots. You tell them they are doing something wrong and you get the ol "I've been keeping these animals longer than you been alive boy." to which I responded, "Have you ever bothered reading a book on these animals in that time?" while one of the guys was smoking over the fish tank he was doing a water change on. Meanwhile one of there 12 year old employees was attempting to sell a lady a "tiny turtle," a slider about the size of a quarter...

Ah yes but with our government I got the ol' "We don't give a poo."

At least the OTHER store was willing to listen and do what is best for their animals. Good job and a pat on the back to at least ONE place around here...
