Rough Aspen?
So I just picked up a giant bag(2 cubic feet) of aspen at petco for $8. I have never used aspen before; it seems rather rough and gritty...not soft and fluffy at all. The chips are a bit larger in size. It says aspen for small animals. Is this aspen okay to use for bps?
Here is a link to it

Thanks
Chad

Re: Rough Aspen?
okay cool. I was just wondering because my local rep store sells aspen that is much more finely cut and seems to be alot softer than the stuff i got.... its also a lot more expensive...
So all aspen is equal then? no need to buy the premium finely cut fluffy stuff?
At petco they had a little tiny bag of aspen for $19 in the reptile section and then this giant thing I got for $8 in the small rodents area.
Just wanted to make sure there is not vital difference.
Thanks

I use the same type of aspen walmart sells atm (its about 10 miles closer than petco and open when im not working). Im pretty happy with it, alot better than when i was using eco earth with my bp's.

I get the same aspen at tractor supply company. Its the larger shavings.
Be cafeful some of them are sharp. I pack down the aspen with my hand after pouring it into the tubs. I get stabbed every now and then.

Re: Rough Aspen?
I prefer the finely ground aspen but if all I can find is the chunky stuff I use it. Once I had an aspen chip get wedged in a bp's mouth, holding the mouth wide open and that is why I prefer the fine stuff.

Re: Rough Aspen?
I use aspen, but I prefer the Zoo Med brand, it's shredded finer and feels softer. But the cyrpess mulch I use has pretty big chunks in it, and I've never had problems with it. Though I'd be careful if you feed in the cage because your snake could accidentily swallow a piece.
