Second day with MY new BP =D(Also Im New Here)

Hi Everyone , I haven't had a snake sine i was a kid and i remembered how much i loved them the other day and decided to go out and get me a BP. To my suprise when i got to the pet store i seen the most beautiful baby python i had ever seen, her father was a Pastel/Albino so she has good genes if i was ever to breed her. The deal maker was that she had the SAME b-day as me! Isnt that crazy so i took her home and i just want to insure that her habitat is BEST for her to grow and be happy.

On the left side i have an over head lamp with a 50 Watt on a screen lid i have a few rocks and am looking to add a few climbing branches her substrate is paper she has a hide box in the cool side with a big water bowl next to it and moss and fake plants around it.

The temp on the warm side is around 95 at the top side of the tank and snake level its around 80

Cool side is also around 80 and sometimes it goes a little hotter i wanted to know if theres some way i cant keep the cooler side cooler?

i also have a thermostat coming in from BigAppleHerp.com and plan on using it for the light.. ill attach some pics and thanks in advance for any replies!

EDIT: How do i add pics? lol thanks

Well hello and welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see pics of your new snake. And it's pretty cool ya got a snake with such nice genes and one that was born on your bday! That is pretty sweet..

As for the setup..the only thing I would change is instead of a light you might want to look into getting an under tank heat pad for your snake. Lights can be used but they tend to really dry out the tank and could lead to some shed issues. Plus snakes don't really like the light (their night creatures)..lol..so an Under tank heatpad would definitely help your snake feel more comfortable (not to mention snakes warm up through their bellies not from their heads)..

Also your going to want to warm side to be anywhere form 86 to 90 degrees on snake level..the cool side could be anywhere from 75 to 82 (room temp. basically...)

Other then that I think it sounds like ya got a pretty good setup going..Wish ya lots of luck..and careful...cause this hobby is addicting..lol

    Thanks for the warm welcomes,
The only thing about the UTH is that i heard they don't raise the ambient temp up as much as a basking light would? Also i want to keep the 12 hour light 12 hour dark thing going on..

PHEWW all of this playing arounf with TEMPs is making me CRAZY! but i love it haha!

    Hi,

    On the picture front;

Well the first thing is to get them hosted somewhere online.

You can put them in your gallery here - this tutorial is a bit old but the basic procedure is the same I think.

And here is another one in video form that might also help.

You can also use a site like http://photobucket.com/

They should also have tutorials to help you.

If you still have trouble just ask any member of staff and we will do our best to get you sorted.

And have you checked out our caresheet?

Re: Second day with MY new BP =D(Also Im New Here)

I use flexwatt in my setup -- I actually have a two uth's -- one for the warm side, and one for the cool. I think you should be okay with the uth's -- as long as you don't live in the Arctic, and keep your room at 70 or above.

Also, not only do the heat lamps suck out humidity, but with an on/off thermosat (which is what I'm guessing is the one you ordered from Big Apple is), the heat lamp is going to be flashing off and on all the time (which would probably annoy the snake, and you!) If you still want to go the lamp route, you could get a che (ceramic heat emitter) -- it just gives off heat, no light.

Also, I noticed the old school thermometer -- an accurite digital thermometer (walmart $12) is almost a must.

Any more ?'s -- just ask!

    Later,

    George

Also, you should probably have two identical hides -- one on each side. That way, the snake doesn't have to choose between temperature and security.

PS The accurite thermometer is nice, because it reads humidity as well (and you want 50% minumum for a ball).

Re: Second day with MY new BP =D(Also Im New Here)

Most people use flexwatt, it is the same as a UTH just cheaper and you can order it easily in bulk. For one snake I don't think it is all that practical.

Get two identical rock cave hides that fit the snake tightly. One for the cool side and one for the warm side. Warm side should be 90-94, cool side 80-85. You absolutely need a thermostat to control a UTH.

If you need the lamp to keep your temps up, so be it.

The biggest problem I see is your thermometers and hygrometer. Get some digital ones, or even better an acurite weather station from Walmart. Many people here, including myself, use those for measuring temps and they work very well.
