Re: People need to get their facts straight.

For many years the media has made it their policy that shock stories and documentaries about snakes and other exotics are good business. They were the macob pet that only the scarce few kept and as such they were the weird and strange. The only reason Steve Irwin got to be so popular was because he took risks and there was danger involved. Had Steve been less energetic and more instructional in his presentations He would have gone the way of Jeff Corwin off to the food Network. Gone are the days of the Mutual of Omaha documentaries where education and scientific fact are given as interesting and entertaining. People like it or not grossed out or sad can't help but look as they pass a car wreck. The same applies to snakes and other exotics. If they are just shown lounging around doing nothing for 30 minutes there's no fun it that. They need to be striking the camera, hooding up, hissing otherwise its just another animal.

LOL. My mother was terrified of snakes at first, told me I could never get one when I was younger, well due to katrina I had moved back with my mother because my apartment got some serious water damage, I ended up getting my yellow anaconda, and she loves her now. Though she never sees her because i'm back in my own place lol.

My mom hated snakes with a great passion..Over time she has gotten to really like them even goes digging through the racks to find her favorites when she comes over.

Yeah, I think most people are not phobic of snakes, they just don't know any better, and just accept what they are told by the media. My mom didn't like my keeping snakes at first either, but now both my parents love them and think they're beautiful. It's ALL about education in my opinion. Unless it's an irrational phobia, once people KNOW and understand a bit about snakes, they're much less likely to fear them.

Re: People need to get their facts straight.

The fear of snakes goes deeper than the media. Most people are taught as kids that snakes a reptiles in general are evil. The devil is even portrayed as a snake in the bible. To most people snakes are soul less evil and serve no real purpose. In order to get past this stigma we have to educate the public and show them how wonderful these animals are to keep. I have this same problem when it comes to my pit bull. All the public hears about is how dangerous they are and what they are capable of. To this day my parents won't step foot into my house in morbid fear of my animals. I'm trying my hardest to show them that these animals are totally safe when properly taken care of.

The problem is that snakes have been vilified for hundreds of years whether it is in folklore, media or religion, while on the other end you have dogs that have been put on a pedestal as a the faithful human companion.

It evil creature vs men's best friend now who do you think the general public is gonna chose?
