Unhappy Always needed to be assisted in shed..

Just thought I'd bring this up right now for future reference. My BP is not shedding right now, but she has some shedding problems.

Last time she shedded, she did shed in 3 pieces without any rips in the 3 pieces or anything. Though, I had to assist her. Why you may ask? She is a lazy shedder. She does not shed on her own, she has me do it for her. Last time she shed, I left her alone to see if she would do it on her own. Though, that didn't work out well. She was in shed for over a week, and in that week she was in blue the entire time. The first few days I soaked her, and after that just left her alone besides misting and water change. She doesn't soak and has never soaked in her water dish either and her water dish is big enough for her. So, the entire week she was in blue, until one day I soaked her in warm water for an hour, and after I took her out her eyes were clear. I put her back in the enclosure and she never tried to shed. I took her out, assisted her (like I have done for a year now when she sheds..), and she shed in 3 clean pieces without any problems.

So, I have no clue what to do. She just is very lazy. Even at the pet store she gave them a hard time with shedding. When I got her, she had a large piece of shedding left on her head so I had to take that off since she wasn't even trying to take it off herself.

Thats weird. My BP doesn't shed in one piece, he sheds it into sections, but hey he gets it all off the first try, so I do not see a problem. Maybe your snake has always had been A.S that she justs expects someone to help her shed. Very unlikely but can be a possibility.

My girl had a pink belly for 3 days, then for 10 days she was blue. She shed in one whole piece. Maybe, if your humidity is high enough, she needs longer before she decides to shed? Ive read somewhere that it takes anywhere between like 10-12 or 12-14 days total. What is your humidity? Mine is 80% the entire time from pink belly day till when she is done shedding.

Oh, and my girl has never soaked either.

From past posts, you say that you only use overhead lighting for heat, and that sucks humidity out of the air. What are you measuring your humidity with? A stick on dial hygrometer, or a digital hygrometer.

Try not soaking her beforehand, only after a bad shed.

I bet if you switched her to a tub setup with belly heat only - you wouldn't have that problem any longer.

You probably are not waiting long enough. They can be in blue for very long periods of time.

Wait until the snake tries shedding itself before soaking them. Soaking them prematurely can cause a bad shed.

Just let the snake do its thing, they will figure it out on their own.

The humidity I kept her at was 70%-75%. She stayed in shed for close to two weeks, which isn't how she always was in shed. She would shed in 6-7 days normally, but she took a good 12 days I think. I misted her substrate each day to make the humidity stay at that level.

What are you using to measure your humidity? An analog or digital device?

Re: Always needed to be assisted in shed..

After she stops being blue eyed how long do you wait before you start assisting the shed? It really sounds like you just aren't giving it enough time and rushing it. Once the blue eyes stop they usually shed within a week, but it can take longer then that. Make sure you are giving her a chance to shed before you start doing it for her. She might just need to shed on her own time not yours.

It's analog. Not much more in terms of details, though. Not like it would make a difference between analog units.
