    Conscious sedation

I was just wondering if anyone that has been consciously sedated would mind sharing there experience with me? I have a tumor in my left hand, and I will be getting surgery at the end of the month to remove it, and make sure it is not cancerous, and they will be sedating me. I know it sounds really pathetic, but I am not scared of the surgery, but very afraid of the sedation. I have a lot of anxiety/hypochondriac issues, and medicine really scares me. The feeling of being " out of it" really makes me panic. I know it is better to do this, and make sure I do not have cancer..I just cant stop thinking about feeling doped up :/

    Thanks

    Re: Conscious sedation

I know what you mean, I don't mind the surgery, it's being knocked out that I don't like, it feels like such a loss of control. Any time I've had it done, and it's only been twice, I've gone out completely and don't remember a thing. The only thing I've remembered was when I was coming out of it after the surgery was over and I had a feeling like I couldn't breath. I even had a nurse tell me 'Yes, you are breathing' It was strangely reassuring to be told that I was in fact breathing, like I couldn't figure it out for myself. Weird huh?

I had to have that done for my wisdom teeth to be taken out. You can hear see and to some extent respond but you have no feeling what so ever. Its the closest to an out of body experence I can imigane almost like your looking out of someone else's eyes.

    Re: Conscious sedation

I was knocked out completely for my wisdom teeth. Or at least that is my recollection of it, as the anesthetic also impairs memory. If I woke up, I wouldnt remember it.

To be honest, it was the best thing in the world. You lie down. They insert the IV.. that sucked, I HATE IVs. Then bam, I was out. Next thing I knew, I was stumbling and being helped out to the car and driven home. I couldn't have asked for an easier time, it was as if instantly the teeth were just GONE.

    Re: Conscious sedation

Thanks a million for the responses. Man that makes me scared...I have out of body experiences all the time...well the feeling. When I start to have a panic attack that is what happens, and I cant imagine how much worse it will be when I have absolutely no control of when and how I come back to reality. Im gonna talk to my doctor about it, I really wish he could just do local, and no drugs for me...Id honestly rather suffer with the pain.

    Re: Conscious sedation

I just had that for my wisdom teeth. I didn't remember a thing. I don't even remember falling asleep. I just remember my mom being in the room with me, then I was being walked to the car.

It was quite surreal but I was glad when I woke up because I knew it was over.

Your body would be acting as it would by instinct but your mind has no control over it. Sounds awesome!

    Re: Conscious sedation

I've been put under general twice and both times it was a piece of cake. It felt like it lasted 3 seconds but really it was an hour and a half. I didn't hear, feel, see or remember anything at all. I remember the colour of the medicine was translucent hot pink though, and that freaked me out because it's the same colour as the stuff they put animals down with at the vet. Momentary panic, lol!

    Re: Conscious sedation

I had it for my wisdom teeth, it was GREAT!

I got some of the giggle gas, a little IV drip and BAM I went out.

I was VERY VERY nervous before it(I don't know why), but it was a good experience.

They said I was chatting (with a mouth full of hands) and laughing and being me, I don't remember anything from gas to peing in the car spitting out blood being ticked because my mouth was sore and I couldn't figure out why.

I would do it again with NO nervousness.

It's a cake walk, enjoy the high.
