I love vampires and vampire stories, and I've seen all of True Blood (except the 1 or 2 most recent episodes)
And it really sucks. The dialogue is contrived, and the characters are boring at best (Sookie, Sam, Bill), and outright obnoxious at worst (Tara, Maryann, Jason).
Rene was really the only likable character and then he ended up being the bad guyMy husband and I even discussed it ahead of time and said if they killed him off then we would immediately stop watching. Which we haven't done since he keeps hoping it will get better.
The second season has been far worse than the first, with the addition of this maker storyline with the annoying girl vampire, and then this whole thing with maryann. Lafayette was pretty entertaining, but then the vamps broke his spirit. Not such a good move since at that point he was the only redeeming thing to the show. Maybe now that he's doing better he'll be interesting again.
For the record, the fact that I watch the show really doesn't mean I think it's good. I also watch Degrassi TNG and Super Sweet 16.
ETA: But if you were a fan of the book, then I can get why you might think the show's pretty good. I have in the past gotten into movies/shows that were bad just because I liked the thing they originally came from...
Really though I don't get why everyone in the world except me likes the show, and I would be quite happy for people to explain to me why it's good. The novelty of their approach to vampires is not nearly enough to make it good, in my opinion. A good idea, implemented poorly, still makes for a bad product overall.
