Yes, ball pythons make great first snakes. I think you should check out the care guides first. Get your enclosure set up before getting your snake. If you get a baby or young ball python, a ten gallon aquarium would be fine for at least a year. I'd use a under tank heater with a reostat(dimmer switch) to control the heat out put of the heater. If you use a screen cover, it needs to be covered up to about 90% with plastic sheeting or aluminum foil. This will keep in heat and humidity.
When you get your snake, don't handle much at all for about a week. It's best to keep handling for short sessions only. I sometimes have mine out for 30 minutes or so if I'm hanging out at the computer desk or something. After feeding, most care sheets say to not handle for 48 hrs.
