Re: hissing
One of my ball pythons used to hiss a lot, and I asked a knowledgable guy who ran a pet store that I used to go to..And he told me that was normal for balls, and didnt mean they were getting defensive or PO'd or anything like that..So she continued to hiss from time to time..actually I thought it was kinda cool...

Re: hissing
He's...well, wrong. lol
It is defensive, they hiss to warn that they want to be left alone--they do it when they're approached or touched. I have one ball python that will hiss when she's not being defensive (IE, no one is approaching or touching her)--and that is a very large female who hisses repeatedly when she lays her eggs. It's kind of amusing--the other females don't do it, at least not that I've heard.
It's evident from their body posture and attitude, in any case.

Re: hissing
I've heard of some balls flicking their tails as a warning, but I've never actually seen it.

Re: hissing
Hi,
My normal male will actually hiss to himself in the tub.
I'll be sitting quietly reading the site and all of a sudden there will be a couple of loud hisses from the other side of the room.
I figured he was just nuts.
