    With Dogs?

I have a sub-adult bp and looking to get a puppy in the winter. However, I'm unsure of whether the dog would always try to get at the snake, would he be able to be trained NOT to mess with the python, or would he be clueless because of the opaqueness of the tub? (By the way, when I handle the snake, I would put my dog in a crate, so other then his sense of smell, neither would know the other exists!)

You may or may not have to train the dog, I hold my snake around my roommates dog, and it's fine, of course my roommates dog is terrified of me.

    Re: With Dogs?

We have a 9 year old Chocolate lab, who is out and in the room when my wife has her adult BP out.

The lab has sniffed the BP a few times, nothing to play with. Romeo even checked out the dog, (looked at him, and approached his nose) again no interest.

BUT, we have had the BP for only 2 months or so.

I bet if the snake struck the dog, the dog wouldn't get close next time lol.

Maybe dont get a terrier, they tend to have a high prey drive.

    Re: With Dogs?

We have 2 dogs and neither have had any issues with our BP.

Our German Shep/Hound/Dobie mix is quite frankly bored with him LOL. She sniffed his tank twice when we first got him and has never shown interest in him again LOL.

Our Brittany Spaniel mix is more of the curious one with him. If we have the baby gate down (I keep it up just so she doesn't annoy him in his tank) then she immediately runs over and starts sniffing away. If I am handling him, I have her kenneled because she can get a little excited playing bowing, barking etc....

It probably will just depend on the dog you get. I would just teach your dog the "leave it" command. That is what has worked for us! Good luck!

    Re: With Dogs?

My dogs have no problem with my snakes being around. My dog Buddy sometimes comes over to sniff my female BP (she's the one I have out the most) and he's very gentle but he wouldn't ever do anything more than sniff her. She also stretches out and sniffs him with her tongue. She even went on his back and tried to dig into his fur! Lol. The ONLY domestic pet I own that has a problem with my snakes is my cat. Man he always tries to attack my snakes, so I never really go near him when I'm handling my snakes.

If you do get a dog, the scent of the dog will NOT bother the snake. Snakes would not bite you if you had the scent of your dog on you and your hands. Snakes don't care if you smell like another animal. It doesn't effect them in any way. The dog will probably not even care about the snake, but if he thinks it's a "toy" then you should keep a distance between the dog and the snake.

I have had my bp around dogs and had no problem. The dogs don't even seem to understand whats in your hand.
