Follicle size?
I was curious how big follicles get before a female will actually ovulate? My female has been off food for 3 weeks now and her follicles feel like they are about the size of a bouncy ball or a shooter marble. Do I stil need to leave the male in or is she good to go. I know all females are different, but, I remember reading somewhere that there is a general rule of thumb on follicle sizes and ovulation. Thanks.

Re: Follicle size?
I've got a girl that has walnut size follicles and still hasn't ovulated.

Re: Follicle size?
I just keep pairing till I see an ovulation. Follicles can grow and then be reabsorbed.
It aint over till the fat lady lays

Re: Follicle size?
Hi,
I also have a follicle question.
Is there a point where follicles can be re-absorbed without the year being over from a breeding standpoint?
I know they do not doubleclutch but is it possible to have really small follicles reabsorbed around dec/ jan and a second cycle release some that begin to mature in the may/july timeframe?
I figured with an ultrasound you would have a better shot of being able to see tiny follicles and know the answer.

Unfortunately I don't have one yet. However, I do pay someone to come ultrasound my stuff about three times during the season. It is not as effective as doing it once every 2 weeks, but it helps take a little strain off of the males.

Derek,
Since I don't have one, I have not been able to determine tan answer to your question just yet. However, I can say that when you are ultrasounding an animal, if you look close, you can typically see the follicles that are lined up for the next cycle, as well as the ones that you are working with at the time. If I am not mistaken, I spoke to someone that told me they saw two years worth of follicles past the current year's follicles. Also, with that said, I do know that I have had females lay eggs, and ovulate about 9 months after that clucth. Which means that technically I got eggs from a Ball female twice in one year.
You guys know I love my little experiments. Man I have a bunch lined up for when I get an ultrasound.
I hope that was somewhat helpful,
