Sorry to hear this, I'm glad the wife isn't hurt. But it just sounds like female dogs establishing pecking orders. Is your 'top' most alpha female getting older?

I'm pretty sure in most pack/pride/group animal situations as the alpha animals get old enough to show signs of weakness, the next most assertive animal will usually kill the dominant animal to get status. Could that be what's happening?
