Re: My first cresties just hatched

    Dawww,

I've always meant to ask - how handleable are they at that age/ size.

I am a bit of a klutz and always got nervous handling baby leo's, and they could only escape in two dimensions.

Do you have any tips for getting them from the egg container into their first home?

    Very carefully

Actually after the first initial jump when I opened the egg box it wasn't too bad, I let them walk on my hand (of course making sure they would not jump) it's pretty much like you do with the adults. (It's all about anticipating where they are gonna jump next ).

Congrats Deb! They're awfully cute! I remembering them shedding within 24 hours for their first shed. Looks like the other one may have hatched first and already shed by the time you found them!

Congrats on your first hatchlings. I still love hatching out baby cresties. With almost 30 eggs sitting on the shelf waiting to hatch out I can't wait for each and every one to come out and play.. and oh yeah, jump.

OMG, I've seen pinky rats bigger than that! But nowhere near as cute though.

And they jump, oh crap, if I were to get one, there would be no breeding of them for me! I would lose so many, my house would be infested with them.

Re: My first cresties just hatched

    Congrats on the cuties!

They do shed within 24 hours of hatching, often while still in the incubator before you even discover them.

I think they actually get jumpier before they settle down, so watch out (they have to be pretty exhausted after hatching out anyhow so that's probably the main reason). For about the first two months they will be pinging off of everything. That is the main reason why I advise that they are not really that handlable when under 2-3 months of age, but after that they usually start to calm down. They aren't terribly delicate (not like some other geckos) as hatchlings, they just tend to be wild little monkeys.

Oh, and they are definitey smaller than a pinky rat when they hatch (at least in girth). It is surprising the first time you see a hatchling, but there are other gecko species that are way smaller when they hatch out!

I love new baby geckos hatching. Congrats.
They can be jumpy little buggers. I seemed to have mastered the catch in mid air with them pretty well though
