    Fecal Float

I (ashamed) have never had a fecal float done on my bp since I got her. I knew nothing of it when I first picked her up.

But she's been healthy, eating well, poop is a little stinky as poop high in protein should be but otherwise normal, and has even seen the vet a couple times and got a clean bill of health. Is it still worth getting done?

If so...(this is like a Goosebumps book haha)

Does an exotic vet have to do it, or can a normal vet do it?
How much does it cost? Will a vet charge for $50 for a visit?
If I can't make it today (she pooped!), can I freeze it for another day?

If not...then enjoy your day and so will I!

    Re: Fecal Float

I ALWAYS get fecals no matter what.

I just zip-loc bag some poop and stick it in the fridge, NOT THE FREEZER!! The freezer can kill bacteria and give false results on the float. In the fridge I only let them sit for a day, maybe 36 hours at the most until I bring it in.

I have to go to my local reptile vet for my floats, the regular ones around here won't do em. Not a big deal though.

Since there's no exam fee, just the fecal, they cost me 15 bucks

    HTH

    Re: Fecal Float

I'm actually taking my girl who's been off feed for quite some time now to the vet this week. If you're only doing the fecal float, I would argue that it doesn't need to be done by an exotics specialist. If you want a full blown checkup, then go to the exotics specialist.

I called the animal hospital I'm taking my snake to and they said they charge $25 for the float if I don't want a full visit.

Does it maater if there's some substrate in the bag? She laid a major load since it's been over a month.

    Re: Fecal Float

    No it shouldn't matter.

Mitch-the exotics specialist part. NO VET in my area that DOESN'T see reptiles will do a fecal on one. It's funny to me, they just won't.

You can try calling around if you'd like, but why not just take the fecal to a reptile vet who knows just what to look for, as well as have the right information on hand for dosing for your certain species?

    Re: Fecal Float

Guh, I hate vets. This is the second one I've gone to in my area. The first gave me a bunch of bs advice and misweighed and missexed my girl.

This one was no better. They asked me if I knew what type of snake it was. They didn't even ask me for weight as if I wouldn't know. Then, when I asked if it was ok for there to be some substrate in the bag, she didn't know what I was talking about. I had to tell her it was "the wood she's on."

Hopefully they can do a float properly.
