He is a water monitor. I dont handle him. I move him to a tub to clean his cage and he gets very nervous. Hes bitten me once but I scared him. As long as he is in his cage I can rub his back and he will be really calm. But he still doesnt trust me enough to be handled outside of his cage
If he's letting you rub his back in the cage at that size, you're off to a good start.
I acquired one in '91 at about 18" TL, and was a nervous wreck. Regurged, took off running, etc. Took a year and a half to calm down. Turned into a 6 foot awesome animal. Best lizard I ever owned. And I've owned quite a few...
Good luck with him. I just hope you realize it's not a big snake with legs...

"That cute little lizard in the pet shop will, in a few short years, become an enormous, ferocious carnivore; capable of breaking the family cat's neck in a single snap and swallowing it whole." - Daniel Bennett
Yea we actually had a 6 foot male that someone stole from us last year. He was the best lizard I could ever ask for. But this guy is off to a great start. He doesnt run or anything from me while im in his enclosure and he doesnt mind me petting him while hes in the cage he just doesent trust me out of his cage yet. BUt hopefully he will come around in time. If not ill just have a pissy lizard lol
Nice looking monitor good luck with him.I would switch out that bark substrate and replace it with a dirt sand mix as it will hold the humidity a little better
We are moving next week into our new house and when we move I am redoing his enclosure.
We went to our local reptile show last year and while we were gone someone busted our sliding glass doors and then got him and left. It had to of been someone we knew though because they knew we were gone and im pretty sure noone is going to try to steal a 6 foot lizard if they didnt know it was tame or not.
