    Escapees from racks?

Has anyone ever had snakes escape from their rack? Or ever hear of anyone having an escapee from a rack?

I'm getting my snakes tomorrow and I just started to get paranoid that they will somehow escape from my rack. Most of the 28qt tubs fit pretty well and the 41qt tubs are extremely snug. Do snakes ever try to push their body weight against something to push it open? I had a snake once push through the lid of her tank, but never up against the side.

Anyway, I get paranoid about everything and after how hard I've worked on all this, I would hate for a snake to get loose.

Here is a picture of my rack (I posted this earlier)

Anyone see any safety precautions I should take?

    Thanks.

You can add on a bar going top to bottom on your bottom 4 shelves and 3 smallers ones for the top shelves...Im gonna see if I cant find an image.

Here's one, it's an image from Pwilliams58's DIY thread on how to build a rack like his.

I put little stoppers on my rack to keep the snakes from pushing out.

You can find them at home depot in the hardware section I believe. They are used for holding in screens in windows and doors.

I have never experienced a smaller snake pushing out of any of my racks but who knows. You can add the locks if it makes you feel comfortable.
ost of your bigger snakes typically push.

    Re: Escapees from racks?

The only time I had a snake escape from a rack is when one of my family members opened one of the hatchling tubs, and did not close it all of the way. I don't think that it is possible for a snake to escape from a rack, unless the rack is improperly built or not closed properly. . You could use some sort of lock, but I don't think that it is necessary.

Yes snakes do escape on rare occations. Mostly it is from leaving the tub slightly open, the larger animals can push open their tubs. I even noticed on RDR's youtube vids that he uses the same pipe configuration on all his racks.

Looking at your configuration though If you feel the need for added security I think the window screen thumb turns would work really well and not be unsightly

That is a great idea! I'm going to go buy some today. I don't *think* they will be able to get out, but I get paranoid about everything. Right now my snakes are 500-600grams and don't think they'd be able to, but I just got a 1500g pastel today and I'm sure he could manage to push his way through if he really wanted to.

I doubt they will be able to get out as most of the tubs fit the rack securely and I live by myself so no one else will be handling them. But I tend to get overly paranoid. I had my beloved first BP escape into a hole in the wall in my classroom and never saw her again (she was the class pet). So I will be devastated if I ever lose another one.

    Re: Escapees from racks?

Actually, I think I'm going to curtain rods (the tension ones) to put longside along each shelf. I think that will work best for my rack and is the easiest solution at this point.

    Thanks!
