Re: hovabator?
Well i'll let you know in another 2 weeks or so. I have my first clutch in a hovabator right now but i do have it connected to a Helix thermostat. i wouldnt recommend using it with the dial control that it comes with. Also to keep the humidity up i put water in the bottom reservoir and put a small heat pad connected to the helix under the Hovabator, this makes the water vapors raise up and maintain the humidity just right. So again, both the Hovabator and the heat pad are connected to the Helix and water in the reservoir and you should be all set.

Re: hovabator?
I have used them for many years with corns, and they have been great. I would be relucatant personally, to use them for royal eggs as they are more specific.
I made a great home made incubator this year which i think will be much better

I've read enough horror stories with ball python eggs, that I'd never trust any of my clutches to a hovabator, especially when making your own is so easy to do.
That's not to say that people haven't had success with them, it's just that I personally would never take that gamble.

Re: hovabator?
i had 10)% success with mine when I did the bp eggs i had last year ( 1st ever clutch ) and i started out with them all wrong, they were too wet and not warm enough. I got the hovabator and got them set set up ( with some help on here ) and had no problems I did place a heating pad under the unit and left it on low to keep the mositure up. I had a digital senor probe in the unit to keep a check on thetemps but once set it worked great.he 2 key parts I think is the light disfuser betwee nthe eggs and the medium.

Re: hovabator?
I used one with a modified bottom for burms back in '95 (producing puzzle het albino) with a pretty good hatch ratio.
I used one this year for my first ball clutch and all of them hatched successfully.
Monitor temps for a few days before you expect the eggs, fill the bottom with moist verm. and put the egg crate on top. No probs.

Re: hovabator?
If you're in Waco, I can give you an AWESOME place to go get a glass-front cooler. They don't work and they sell them for $25.
They have some smaller ones, 3ft tall or so, that work perfect for someone with just a few clutches.
If you want help getting it set up, I wouldn't mind at all.
Their number is 254-799-9777. Just ask if they have any non-working glass-front coolers.
PLEASE don't use a hovabator when you have so many other, more viable options. All you need to do is get a GOOD digital thermostat, even a Johnson Controls or a Ranco is JUST fine(I use Johnson Controls personally and they don't fluctuate). They run about $75. Then you need to buy 3-4 ft of 11" flexwatt from www.reptilebasics.com.
I can help you wire it and get it all set up if you want me to. I even have a place to get vermiculite and Home Depot has the light diffuser and perlite. You need some 6qt tubs or similar, plus some Glad Press N Seal, and some digital thermometers.
