Re: Sand Valley Feed
I know that this is an older post but I'm hoping I can get some info here. I spent hours and hours researching lab block and finally went with Sand Valley. After researching I felt comfortable that since it was manufactured by Harlan and identical that it was the best food for me, especially at the price I was paying ($18 for 40). I had tried Mazuri but it made my mice poop a ton and they really smelled.
Well I got my most recent order of Sand Valley (400 pounds worth) and the ingredients have changed! It's now labeled as 7155 and it includes "animal protein products" and "porcine fat" in the ingredients. I can't imagine Harlan would put those ingredients in their foods. I'm waiting on a response from Harlan, I also tried to contact Sand Valley Farms but I've been told they're no longer in business.
My food bags have no contact info on them.
Can anyone shed some light on this???

no clue on the ingredients.
I tried one bag for my rats and asf's..
$16/40lbs or $24/50 = $.08/per lbs difference.
went through the sand valley much quicker. Did they like it more? Did the block crumble easier thus more waste? Was the bag just plain lighter than 40 lbs?
no clue...
but in the end the output was the same. Unless I find a huge discount or see a big gain, I and staying with Mazuri from here on out.

I don't like the Mazuri, I think it makes the mice's waste smell because it has fish in it but....
I'm not really here looking to argue Mazuri vs. Sand Valley or to change anyone's mind--whatever works for everyone is great. I'm trying to find out who the heck is manufacturing/selling it now and to let people know to check the bag as it has changed.
The whole reason Sand Valley was so great was not because it was $16 per bag but because it was Harlan food at $16 a bag...which it now appears not to be.

Re: Sand Valley Feed
Hey Luvmy... You must be the person that emailed me!
I did a quick search online, of course I didn't see a darn thing. I was thinking about calling Harlan customer service, but I never got around to it. Hope to see something from Harlan soon, since I am positive they direct people to this feed.
I guess we'll see. I can get Harlan directly so I've never had a reason to get Sand Valley, but it's a drive for me to get it...
Oh, and your right, Harlan proudly displays on their site that they do not use animal products besides some fish meal in some of the formulas.

Re: Sand Valley Feed
I've been using a ton of Sand Valley a month since January. It's made by Harlan for Dean Moyer at Sand Valley Farms, before using SVF I used Mazuri for like 1 1/2 year and I like more SVF the smell is less and the production is as good as with Mazuri, my rodents seems to love it so I do too.
The price is $13.50 for a 40# bag if you get a ton.
The customer service is awsome and Dean and Carol are great guys.
You can contact Dean at 717-694-3759
Say that Juan Carlos from Puerto Rico gave you his contact info.

Re: Sand Valley Feed
Juan Carlos, I think you may have missed one of my points. It was a great food but now the ingredients have changed and I think it's a less great food. I want to hear from Harlan if they still manufacture it, I know that they did once but now I'm not convinced. Thanks for the contact #, I won't call until I hear from Harlan.

Re: Sand Valley Feed
I heard back from Harlan and they say they do still make it and it's "primarily" plant ingredients in the food (though the animal protien and porcine fat are the 4th and 5th ingredients). Today is not the day and this is not the forum to further post any of my feelings on the issue but at least now we know. Interestinly enough Harlan's own lab block doesn't refect this ingredient change.

Re: Sand Valley Feed
I have never looked at the ingredients again since I got my first ton of SFV back in January, at that time I did the research and Harlan Customer Service were the ones that gave me Dean Moyer contact info.
This is a scan of one of the ingredients tags that comes attached to SVF bag, this is from the last ton I received 3 weeks ago, next ton will be here next week so I'll chek again and will let you know.
In this tag no animal ingridients are shown.
