    Re: Can Rats Eat Beneful?

I highly suggest adding a gravity-fed water system. They are easy to install, and cut down on daily work. You just fill the bucket every week or two instead of filling water bottles daily. Also make sure you never let the food run dry, because the rats will eat their way out to try to find food. I had a raccoon come into my garage one night and eat all of the food off of the hoppers. The next morning the rats in that tub had eaten through and escaped. I keep my food hoppers full at all times.

    Good luck!

I agree 100% with TWH and others, that dog feed is extremely high in protein, and red dye is no good.

Any purina dealer can order Mazuri in 50# bags, it will take some homework by you calling around and finding them. Tractor supply store can order Kent Rodent 19%.

Doesn't even sound like a very good dog food, but that's a different discussion...

I too have had to use Dog food in a bind and your right they get oily and even started loosing their hair in places. I'm sure there are other dry foods besides "Rat Chow" out there that will work just fine for the rats, but to me I don't have the time or the money to be doing a year of trial and error to find it.

It's not cheap to feed rats we go through bout 50 lbs ever week and a half here and at 23.00 a bag it can get rough.

To the OP..In a pinch dog food is fine for a short period..But if your going to breed rats its best to feed rat food..in the long run.
