Re: How do YOU keep your room cool?

We are having the same problem. With 5 Uromastyx all needing a basking spot between 110 and 120 with a background temp of 100 it gets the main reptile room hot quick. We've been using fans to try and circulate the cooler air from other areas of the house into that room. Plus some of the animals that don't need/like it that hot have been moved to other rooms which are cooler. So the house is kind disorganized right now. lol

As soon as it's too hot in the entire house the bf will turn on the air conditioning and then it's not as bad. We just open up the air vents in that room all the way and still use fans.

It would probably make more sense to put in a window unit but at this point the bf isn't willing to do that. Of course I'm also trying to convince him we don't really need 5 Uro's. lol

I might try the suggestion of the curtains too, we don't worry about the outdoor light since we have so many bulbs on timers. They create plenty of light.

Hope you get it worked out, and let us know what you come up with.

Re: How do YOU keep your room cool?

What do YOU do to keep your room cool on these approaching hot days?
    Nothing

Fortunatly for me the snake room is in the basement and never gets over 80/82 in the heat of the summer (and I live in the south) so no AC unit needed.

My problem is during the winter but even than nothing I would not have to do in another room anyway. (Heated with oil filled heater)

I think in your case the best option is to have a window unit.

Nothing here either. This apartment building faces Northeast, so the sun hardly reaches us. All I do is keep the AC set to 78 (higher would hurt the corns) or so and use fans for us and the rodents when it gets really hot. In summer the apartment sits at about 80, in winter it's 70 (with an oil-filled heater in the bedroom for the snakes).

My suggestion would either be to close the vents to the rooms you don't want cooled and set the AC for a good temp, or to get a window unit for that room.

get yourself an energy saver AC window unit .
set it so that if it goes above whatever temps you set that way when it gets to hot ac comes on cools it down back to your desired temps in room ..

that will be the best thing you can do to solve that problem ..

Re: How do YOU keep your room cool?

    Thanks for the replies everybody!

I went out today and picked up a cheap ol window unit and installed it today!

I hooked it up to my spare Double Ranco and it's running perfect! The air conditioner wants 3 minutes between turning it off and on so I set the Ranco at a 2 degree differential to space it out a bit.

I'll have to throw a few quick pictures up tomorrow to show my little setup.

Who knows, maybe a Blood picture or two in there as well

A friend of mine uses a big piece of styrofoam insulation. And just puts it in when he needs it. You can get creative so it doesn't look like crap. Paint it tan and then draw lines across it so from the outside it will look like regular blinds.

OK so here is what I did, and it WORKS GREAT! This big girl says she loves not being so hot during the day anymore!

Here's a simple $100 window unit purchased at Home Depot, on left side of picture

Made sure it was a mechanical controlled one, and hooked it up to these

    It's keeping my animals cool

Oh yeah, the white ones are great! That way you can make sure the cage is as clean as possible.
