Egg Box Temp?

Ok I have a full size refrigerator converted into an incubator. I ran the Inc. for one month with egg boxes inside. I have a helix therm. to regulate temps. I checked almost daily the temps inside the egg boxes with a temp gun. At this time i only had the 6q tubs with no sustrate inside. Every tub was 88.5- 90 degrees without substrate. I would just shine the ray from the temp gun on the bottom of the tub. So i thought everything was working well. I am expecting the first clutch of the season on May 31. I went ahead and added peralite in the egg box and place my themometer/hygrometer in the egg box. The themometer is reading 89 with 95% humidity. But when i shine the temp gun on the substrate i get a 85.5 degree to an 87 degree reading. Shouldn't the substrate be 89 like the air temp in the egg box?

sounds like you are spot on. I wouldnt worry, the temp gun might be picking up the moisture evaporating which drops temps. The air temp is what you are concerned with.

Yep! And remember, when you get eggs in them, and they start moving around... that is going to create heat too. *More towards the end of incubation of course* Also, in the past I had a problem with keeping humidity up with substrate... Now I LOVE to see 100% or HI humidity on the stats! BIG fan of Press N Seal right here! I'm also suspending over pearl-lite and water for the 2nd year... and I love that too! If you are reading 95% before the eggs are in there, I would defentlly consider using some P & Seal!

Why the press and seal if my humidity is at 95 already. I know it needs to be higher. I also have a couple of small holes in the side of the egg box to alow air flow, so some of my humidity is going to escape there. I went and got a light diffuser today. I figure if the air temp is 89-90 then getting the eggs off the substrate would be fine. Then even if the substrate temp is 85-86 my eggs will not be.They would be at the air temp Right? Are there any disadvantages to using a light diffuser to suspend the eggs?

i have no condensation issues at all when i use press and seal. its great!

Because the press n Seal will make the humidity higher.

Yep! No holes... Remember, there are many successful ways to incubate BP eggs.... Some people use substrate, some suspend over water/substrate. Some cover with press N seal, some don't. Some vent their egg boxes everyday, some don't open them until they start to pip! And the combinations go on and on... all depends on what works for you! I use press n seal and love it! Except when the eggs are in the last stretch of incubation, I do get condensation and haft to replace the p and s and wipe the boxes, but towards the end I like to do an air exchange anyway... so it works out great!
