    Strange year?

I talked to a couple breeders at the Repticon show in Orlando Fl. this weekend and a couple of them said this has been a strange year as far as breeding goes. Some snakes went off early while others are just now ovelating. What is your take?

In my limited experience, I would have to agree. Everyone is going late this year, some are not receptive at all to breeding. It's just had a weird feel to it this year.

    Re: Strange year?

i have spoken to quite a a few breeders myself and i have also heard of a ton of smaller clutch sizes .

where their girls were throwing 10 eggs every year ,this year they threw 6 or 7...

it seems this year is very off from the norm .. hopefully that means next year will be slamming ..
I love it when people tell me, "You should think before you speak!" I'm like, "I did. It's what I think and I really don't give a crap what other people think."

    Re: Strange year?

Compare to last year I am actually doing better, only 2 more clutches to be laid 1 due any day and the last one due in 45 days.

I am early compare to last season of course it is not like I am hatching a bunch of stuffs either.

    Re: Strange year?

We seem to be about four weeks behind schedule. However, the clutch sizes seem to remain pretty average so far, as well as individual egg weight seems to be pretty normal. As for clutch count, it looks as though we will produce about 30% more clutches this year, which will put us within 2 clutches plus/minus of my goal set at the beginning of breeding season.

NOTE: we are bit later on clutches, but I also started breeding three weeks later than last year, if that means anything.

Wonder if that's why my 6 egg girl from last year, who was bigger this year, threw just 4 eggs (116 gram eggs, mind you - but still).

    Re: Strange year?

I agree the people I have talked too say their snakes are just now ovulating. I have a female due to lay eggs on May 31 and another female just now starting to develope folicles. So I blame Texas's messed up weather patterns. Snows one day and the next it is 70-80 degrees. We are getting a late spring also just now getting all of Aprils rain.
