It kind of reminds me of those IMG snakes. They suddenly lose color, then gradually gain it back.

Also, isn't it pretty normal for BPs to darken with age?

If it is a copper deficiency, maybe feeding him rodents that have been raised on hog food would help. Hog food is very high in copper.
