not all animal rights groups are against us

Came across this craigslist post: the MN Valley Humane Society is having a seminar on reptile care apparently. It sounds like a good way to make sure that 8 year old wanting a pet corn snake or ball python raises it to be healthy and happy.

I was just intrigued and thought I would share.

Human societies are not animal rights groups, by any stretch of the imagination.

Animal welfare is far far different from animal rights, which I learned the hard way.

Thats awesome. I am actually an animal rights activist, and totally for the reptile hobby, although there are some idiots who create exceptions. I don't mean to hijack your thread just want to post an animal rights photo

If you believe in higher rights of animals or equal rights to humans (they should never be pets, educational, or need animals) then your an animal rights activist.

If you believe in an animals well being, treatment, and are against animal abuse, then you are an animal WELFARE activist.

Animal rights activists are PETA.. and bad..

Re: not all animal rights groups are against us

I'm all for animal welfare, and not for animal rights.
Animals do not have rights. We should be held accountable for how they are treated. They don't have a voice to speak for their rights. Once someone else is speaking for them, then they have no rights, and the person is assuming all responsibility.. which is a keeper, not a advocate.
Not to debate, but animal welfare is being concerned that the animals are being treated fairly and being kept in a responsible healthy manner. Boycotting circuses that use animals is a animal welfare issue to me.

Keep in mind that local humane societies are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the US in any way.

The HSUS operates ZERO shelters and gives ZERO dollars to local Humane Societies.

Actually the MN herp society has a very good working relationship with most of the local humane societies around the Twin Cities area and we have done educational shows with many of them. Most of the local humane societies call the MHS when they take in unwanted reptiles because they don't have the facilities to care for them. They are then usually placed in new homes through the MHS's adoption program. These are animal welfare groups and have no affiliation with the national animal rights groups you hear so much about.

Re: not all animal rights groups are against us

PETA protests circuses because they think it is wrong to "use" the animals to entertain people. To them, it does not matter if the animals are being treated well or poorly, simply "using" them is a violation of their rights.

I would think that most people who care about animal welfare would be thrilled to see a circus that treats its animals well. I am not going to get into any debate about whether or not such a thing exists or is possible, because I know virtually nothing about how circus animals are treated.

I would like to recommend to everyone that you learn the difference between "animal rights" and "animal welfare" and then try to use the correct terms for what you mean. It is unfortunate that the terms are so similar and easily confused, but that is what they are.

To get back to the original post, I think it is great that the local humane society in MN is working with the herp society like that. Thanks MarkS for the insiders view.
