The snake "standing up" doesn't have yellow belly in it- its just a pretty intense looking super pastel.
Also, the background from these photos was black velvet. I find it helpful to get velvet with the finest fibers possible and to rotate it to an angle where the velvet is absorbing all the light that hits it. This minimizes reflection off of the fibers and keeps everything very uniform and black.

Thanks a lot! I'm shooting with a Canon t1i of 500D, whatever you want to call it and these were shot with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. I'm still totally new to both as I just got them Wednesday but, so far, I'm really liking them. The lens takes VERY sharp images for being inexpensive.

No matter if the lens is inexpensive, you are definitely using its full capability!
