    1 Hide ok?

I just order 1.1 het pied from bhb, and i'm going to them each in a 12Qt. sterilite tub. Is it ok to have just one hide? the only reason I ask is because with 2 in there, there is like no room for a water dish.(have pic below) If it is ok should it be on the hot or cold side. I also don't have my rack done. So i'm going to put the 2 tubs with the ends next to each other and use 1 UTH 11x23. Putting it in the middle. Is this ok for now.

I would have two. They like to be in tight secure places. They will give up warmth for security. If the hide is on the cold side they will hide there and give up the heat. If it's on the warm side, they could get too warm giving up the coolness of the cold side needed to regulate body temp. This is my personal experience with my specific ball, your experience may be different from mine.

I use 15qt tubs which are slightly larger but I'm able to fit two of those hides along with one of these for a water bowl...

I bought the crock dishes at Pier 1 for $1 ea when they were on sale. You might be able to fit the hides in an "L" configuration with the water bowl in the corner.

With that said most of my guys do ok with one hide or no hide in my rack set up.

    Re: 1 Hide ok?

What I do when I have this problem is to turn one of the hides sideways and stick it in the corner, with the entrance towards the center of the tub. Then I put the water bowl right next to the sideways hide. That way you have a warm and cool side hide, but the water bowl fits too - I usually do this so the water bowl is on the cool side, for less evaporation in my rack. See if that works for you.

edit: Oh sorry, that may be what Spaniard meant by an "L" configuration! Didn't catch that!

    Re: 1 Hide ok?

I've only ever had 1 hide and they do just fine. It's not like the tub is that big anyhow and as long as they fit snugly in the hide they should be perfectly fine.

BTW how big are they? If they are under 400 grams they should be in a smaller tub IMO.

Depends on the setup and the animal itself!

Try and see how it works for you.

Also if your concern is the space from the picture I see, 2 hides are fine too.

I've had my little ones in 15qt tubs since they were 100g with no feeding issues at all. Different strokes for different folks

    Re: 1 Hide ok?

Personally, I believe in using two hides, so that in case the warm hide gets too hot, the snake can move before it burns itself. Also, my BP is a neat freak; she refuses to be in a hide she has defecated in. If I am not home to clean up the mess, she can still feel secure without having to sleep in her own feces.

But many people succeed with one hide (should be at warm side of tub). I guess it depends on the snake and the stability of the temps. I use a rheostat (no thermostat), so the temps are manually controlled. There have been a few incidents in which the heat pad went wacky while I was gone and the warm hide exceeded 98*. So, I feel that my girl is much safer if she has an alternative place to be if she is uncomfortable in one hide.

    Re: 1 Hide ok?

I use one hide in my racks from hachling until they reach about 1000 grams and then I remove the hide completely. They will burrow under the unprinted newspaper. I've never had feeding issues. But with racks the tubs are completely enclosed within the rack so they are dark compared to just a single tub sitting out
