Temp on hotside Question

I know there are tons of these on here, but I couldnt find one to answer exactly what I am asking, so I figured to start a new thread.

I recently put my lil dude in a plastic tub instead of a glass aquarium, and I put the probe taped onto the bottom directly, and it gave a reading of 95 degrees. Then I was thinking " he doesnt even touch the direct bottom". I put paper towel down, and then some aspen shavings. So I taped the probe to the paper towel, and now have a reading of 90 degrees, which sounds better.

So do you think the probe should be taped to the direct bottom, or the paper towel? Thanks

When you say probe, are we talking about a thermometer probe or a thermostat probe?

And I like to know the temps both under and on top of the substrate.

He can get under the substrate and come into contact with the higher temps.

I am talking about a thermometer probe, not the thermostat probe, just asking about the temperature. Under all of the substrate it is about 94-95 degrees, and when I put it on top it is 90 degrees. I dont think he can get under the papertowel.

It is electrical tape. Is that bad?

If you're going to be using tape in the enclosure I would only use scotch tape as anything else can lead to some serious issues if your snake gets stuck to it. Scotch or painters tape should come off the snake pretty easy should it get some on it.

I like knowing both above and below substrate temps, but if I had to pick one I would want to know my what the temps are below the substrate. In the event something goes wrong with your heating element having the probe under the substrate would give you an immediate..."Uh Oh somethings wrong" indicator.

Did you give enough time to heat. I did the same thing to mine, but it took awhile for the substrate to heat up. I would read it next to the bottom. Just incase. You don't want it to be over 100 degress where your bp can get to it. It's unlikely he'll go under the paper towels, but it has happened. Also, you could hot glue it with a glue gun, to reduce risk of the bp getting tape on him. It's not fun to get off.

Thanks for the replies. The only thing that I am worried about is that i will not get an accurate reading of what the temperature is that he is lying on. Do you think I should use two probes? ONe above and one underneath? Or if I do have it on the bottom, and it reads 95 degrees, I will know that above it is in the 90 area?

I would only use one. Your bp is going to push some of that substrate down anyway. and 90 is a perfect temp. I would just keep an eye on your snake. She'll switch from hot to cold as she needs too, and if you only seeing her on the hot side, it could be too cold. But if she's moving, then you know its just right

Okay, so you are saying to keep it above or below the substrate? And I have one more question. ( i appologize for all the questions!!!)

I was looking at him yesterday night, and realized the there is the tiniest little blur spot on his left eye, and on his left nostril it looks like it is clogged with a tiny piece of shed. Do you think this is all it is, and will it come off next shed? THANKS !!!
