    Question about thermostat

Is this one pretty decent? And how do I know what size to get (I.E. 500 or 1000 watt)? I cannot afford the expensive thermostats.

Heat pads, these are zoomed. I think they work the best because the highest i've ever gotten mine are abouot 96. Still use a thermostat just incase of power surges, and96 is a little warm, but they won't burn.

And here a a couple thermostats.

The last one is a rheostat. They still work, but are cheaper. I don't think they are as reliable as the thermostats, and most people will tell you to use them on a temporary basis. I have also heard from people who use them as permanent with no problems. I guess you just have to find out and see

    Re: Question about thermostat

I've been using a rheostat for a few months. I also have a temp gun to check temperatures daily. The rheostat hasn't dissapointed me yet...consistent temperatures everyday so far.

Yes, as long as you get the right size. They should cover 1/4-1/3 of the tank.

Thanks tdietz for the rheostat input I've never used one, so I couldn't give accurate information on one.

    Re: Question about thermostat

The only thing I notice with a rheostat is fluctuations when the room temp changes much. For an on/off type you can usually find a good deal on a Johnson or Ranco stat as they have been well proven to be dependable.

    Re: Question about thermostat

Almost forgot, well I did forget, that's why I'm posting again.

Typical heating pads are only 10-30 watts and even if you are running Flewatt, you would have to have ALOT to get 500 watts being used. The 1000 watt is probably more than you need, if you only have 1-2 enclosures, you will be fine with the 500R.

    Re: Question about thermostat

I just got a 500R last Thursday .. I have temp probes on the hot/cold sides and a temp gun. So far its been doing a great job keeping the temps where I want them with minimal adjustments.
