    What locking mechanisms

are you all using for your 10 gallon screen tops? I have bought two different kind and neither fit. One are the Zilla clips and the other I got from my local pet store. These fit fine on my 20 gallon, but they just wont latch on the 10o. i am using a weight for now. HELP

I am thinking of getting some belting and buckles to wrap around the tank.

    Re: What locking mechanisms

I wouldn't use weights. If your ball python is strong enough to lift them, he/she could try to squeeze out and then get crushed under the weight.

I am not really familiar with tank sizes and what kind of tank clips you can get. You could try and find adjustable metal clamps?

I just use tubs with locking lids (I have juvi snakes so they can't get out, and they don't really try).

    Re: What locking mechanisms

DO NOT use weights or tape to hold down your lid
You will learn, just like I did, the hard way that it's not a good idea
Do not assume that weights and tape are sufficient to keep your BP enclosed

They really are escape artists. You may think that you've covered all the bases, but they'll find a way out.

Point blank: if the screen doesn't fit the tank or has no way of holding itself in place, buy a Zilla Critter cage with a built in locking lid or buy one of those thick metal wired lids that snap into place around the frame of the tank (they've got a little door in the middle)

    Re: What locking mechanisms

I had a zilla brand screen top and the zilla clips for my 10g. The top was just a BIT too big and it never fastened securely ... after I caught my snake trying to push out I got the tank with the slide in lid. My GF has a screen top for her 10g (corn snake) thats hinged in the middle and IT all snaps really tight. I guess all the tolerances have to be just right for them to fit properly.

    Re: What locking mechanisms

The main problem is that most 10 gallon tanks are made for fish and there are several different manufacturers that make them and they all make them in different sizes so that you have to buy the lid and canopy that they make. When we use them for reptiles we buy after market lids that serve the purpose, however Zoomed and companies like them that make the lids are not going to make lids to fit all the different manufacturers sizes so they make one that will fit on all of them. The only real solution to this problem s get a critterkeeper which has a built in lid that slides or some other type of enclosure that will work better The normal screen lids do usually work well enough but for very active snakes or very strong snakes I am not sure I would trust them. Large dictionaries work just fine, space them evenly, if possible, and you should be just fine.

"Law of the woods, eat or be eaten." - Jack London
0.1 Adult normal - "Jemima" (Jem)
    1.0 Sub-adult spider - "Spidey"
