    Best Substrate

I am currently using coconut husk as my substrate. Never used it before, and am noticing that it does not hold the humidity in the best.

What would you recommend for a glass enclosure to help hold the humidity?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Cypress mulch, double milled.

Or just move to a plastic tub

I would recomend getting rid of the glass tank. If you haven't already cover about 3/4 of your screen top, go do so. I would use cypress mulch and mist as needed.

    Re: Best Substrate

I have a 55 gal glass, but the substrate doesn't matter. In order to keep humidity up, i have to cover the top with a wet towel. I also have a waterfall (great to keep humidity, but not fun to clean, and you have to do it often). I also have a cup with some paper towels in it to help (which also has to be cleaned at least once a week). I just switched from repti-bark to aspen, and neither seemed to do big changes to the humidity. I can't wait to get my rack built.

The aspen wont do anything for the humidity. The zoo med repti bark is garbage. It holds the humidity great for about a 1/2 hour after you mist it. I also noticed that gets in the belly scales. It looks like theres dirt between the scales. Now I just use news paper. Cheap and easy.

I love cypress for the humidty, but hate feeding on it. I take out plants and one hide, lay down newspaper and feed on that. Then I put it all back. It holds humidity for me wonderfully.

Yes, that is why i switched. especially when i bumped up the humidity for her shed, her belly was an ugly brown. I will probably be putting paper in my tubs, when I get my rac built. I'm sure it will be much easier to clean than the others. I just already had the aspen, and didn't want to waste it. Just more cleaning for me

From the sound of it, I am going to be doing myself a favor by building the new cage and getting away from the glass.

I will be using the following as my template, although I do see some changes that I will make to mine, just because I can!

hmmm I use coconut bedding and I don't have any troubles. I really like it actually. Of course I also cover the top with a towel and mist every couple days or so. Also, during the shed cycle I put damp sphagnum moss around the tank to boost the humidity. Maybe some brands of coco fiber are better than others...
