call me cheep but don't these seem a little expensive?

I got my ball for free from a guy who could no longer care for him.

I walked into the pet store today to look at some heat bulbs and curiosity got the better of me. I went over to the BP's and noticed that they had normals for sale for $350. That just seemed stupid expensive to me. They had ball python "starter Kits" that came with a baby ball a ten gallon tank and some substrate for $750

When I got home I figured I would check on line to see what some people in my area were selling their Balls for. Here is what I found.

If that snake is three feet long than his water dish must be massive (in the pictures.) not to mention the 77gallon tank. The poor snake must think he is going on some kind of epic adventure to get from one side to another.

    This is Canadian dollars BTW

Is this normal? or am I just extremely lucky that I got such a wonderful pet for free?

How much did you guys spend on your snake? (referring to normals here as I know other morphs can get pricey.)

Nope, not for Canada. Different countries can expect different supply and demand.

Re: call me cheep but don't these seem a little expensive?

    Did you get lucky?

    Yeah you did.

You could have inherited a sick snake, and a whack of vet bills as well. Lots of people will not touch CL or Kijiji snakes unless they come from a breeder.

Same with pet store snakes. Overpriced, minimal QT, and often poorly started.

It is nice you got a good snake, but I see really shabbily cared for snakes being dumped online all the time by people that "did not have the time" etc to care for them, and provided them with improper husbandry.

I had to put down a snake that I got online not that long ago. The previous keeper kept her at too high of temps long-term and the snake came with the equivalent of a brain injury as a result.

As far as the pet store, yes that is over priced, but most people that are not into snakes would not know that, nor would they know they are being sold a bunch of stuff they do not need.

The goal of pet stores is to sell product.... so they are not doing anything but their jobs in that case.

Two months ago I got an 8 year old virgin normal female for free. The owner contacted me and said he could not care for her, and asked if I would take her. The snake is not only beautiful, but she eats like a horse, and is the sweetest tempered thing I have ever met.

300.00$ - 450.00 is the going price still for proven females.

40-60.0 for normal males, and 60-100.00 for female hatchlings, a female close to breeding weight but unproven is usually 250.00 - 300.00.

My best adult female came for the whopping price of 50.0$ (an 8 year old virgin that laid 9 eggs last season), but I also have proven breeder females I have paid upwards of 450.00$ for.

You will pay more for a snake (esp. a morph) in an area where there are not a lot of that type of snake. And being that in CAN we can only ship by airlines, that gets lots of people that will only buy locally (even though the shipping is only about 65.0$, as it used to be 125.00$ - most people do not realize that prices have actually gone down as they are shipped cargo now only).

wow I didn't pay that much for my het axanthics .. I see normals going for 40-60 on craigslist and the local pet shope list them as 90 bucks.. Plus in delaware you must show ( proof) of a permit. which they are changing the regs I am being told ns it sucks cause my permit will be come void from what I here.

    Addendum:

That ad, the concern is making the money back on the enclosure, not on the snake.

Kijiji regularly has normals "tout inclus" that are priced around 300.00 to 500.00.
